For Departure[Bearbeiten]

Approach: Localizer DME East[Bearbeiten]

  • Chart: Instrument Approach Chart LOC/DME Procedure East.
  • LOWI has no ILS, only the localizer OEV, frequency 111.10, which leads to runway 08 as well as to runway 26.
  • The airport is surrounded by high mountains. So sticking closely to the procedures is crucial for a successful approach and landing!

How To Fly[Bearbeiten]

  • Before starting the approach reduce your speed downto 220 kts or less.
  • IAF: NDB RTT "Rattenberg", frequency 303, at 9500 ft.
  • Leave RTT on heading given by atc (usually 210° or 220°) not faster than 220 kts.
  • Maintain 220 kts until crossing NDB AB.
  • On heading given by atc (usually 210° or 220°) capture the localizer OEV, frequency 111.10, course 255°.
  • Make sure to descend as shown in the chart (no glidepath is available!):
    • RTT: 9500 ft
    • D-19,0 OEV1): 9500 ft
    • D-17,0 OEV: 8700 ft
    • D-14,0 OEV: 7500 ft
    • D-9,0 OEV: 5500 ft
    • D-6,3 OEV / NDB AB: 4400 ft
  • Localizer guidance ends at the NDB AB "Absam", frequency 313 (or DME-6,3 OEV) at 4400 ft. You must have the airport in sight when crossing the NDB AB. If the airport is not in sight go around and follow the missed approach procedure.

1) "D-19,0 OEV" means "DME indication 19.0 nm away from OEV"

Landing on runway 26[Bearbeiten]

  • Charts:
  • Aerodrome elevation: 1907 ft.
  • Runway 26: 2000 x 45 m, direction 261°.
  • When crossing NDB AB begin reducing your speed.
  • Fly directly into final of runway 26 and land on runway 26.
  • Leave the runway directly via A without backtrack to support the tower controller. So brake a little harder than normally :-)

Landing on runway 08[Bearbeiten]

  • Charts:
  • Aerodrome elevation: 1907 ft.
  • Runway 08: 2000 x 45 m, direction 081°.
  • When crossing NDB AB begin reducing your speed.
  • After the NDB AB (or D-6,3nm OEV) turn left on visual heading ~230° towards the NDB INN, frequency 420, not lower than 3700 ft.
  • Short before the NDB INN turn right on a visual heading ~264° (that is right downwind runway 08), not lower than 3700 ft.
  • At D-3,5 OEV turn into base, start descend again, then turn on final and land on runway 08.
  • Leave the runway directly via B without backtrack to support the tower controller. So brake a little harder than normally :-)

Go Around / Missed Approach[Bearbeiten]

  • Chart: Instrument Approach Chart LOC/DME Procedure East
  • Climb on localizer OEV with maximum climb rate.
  • At DME-1,0 OEV turn left heading ~60° back towards the NDB AB and
  • rejoin the localizer OEV, course 075° (this time outbound) and maintain maximum climb rate.
  • When crossing D-14,0 OEV turn left to RTT and enter the holding in 9500 ft and/or follow the atc instructions.

Approach: Localizer DME West[Bearbeiten]

  • Chart: Instrument Approach Chart LOC/DME Procedure West.
  • This approach is very challenging!
  • LOWI has no ILS, only the localizer OEJ, frequency 107.70, which leads to runway 08 as well as to runway 26.
  • The airport is surrounded by high mountains. So sticking closely to the procedures is crucial for a successful approach and landing!

How to fly[Bearbeiten]

  • Before starting the approach reduce your speed downto 220 kts or less and full landing configuration is recommended to keep speed low.
  • IAF: NDB KTI "Kühtai", frequency 413, at 13000 ft.
  • Leave KTI on heading given by atc (usually 104°) not faster than 220 kts.
  • Maintain 220 kts until crossing NDB AB.
  • Capture the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066°.
  • Make sure to descend as shown in the chart (no glidepath is available!):
    • KTI: 13000 ft
    • D-20,4 OEJ2): 13000 ft
    • D-17,4 OEJ: 10500 ft
    • D-14,4 OEJ: 9000 ft
    • D-11,4 OEJ: 7500 ft
    • D-6,5 OEJ: 5000 ft
    • D-4,4 OEJ / NDB AB: 5000 ft
  • Before reaching NDB AB you will fly over the airport. Do not try to land!
  • Localizer guidance ends at the NDB AB "Absam", frequency 313 (or DME-4,4 OEJ) at 5000 ft. You must have and maintain the airport in sight before crossing the NDB AB. If the airport is not in sight go around and follow the missed approach procedure.

2) "D-20,4 OEJ" means "DME indication 20.4 nm away from OEJ"

Landing on runway 08[Bearbeiten]

  • Charts:
  • Aerodrome elevation: 1907 ft.
  • Runway 08: 2000 x 45 m, direction 081°.
  • When crossing NDB AB begin reducing your speed.
  • After the NDB AB (or D-4,4 OEJ) turn right on visual heading ~255° and fly towards the NDB INN, frequency 420, not lower than 3700 ft.
  • Short before the NDB INN turn right visual heading ~264° (that is right downwind runway 08), not lower than 3700 ft.
  • At D-14,1 OEJ turn into base, start descend again, then turn on final and land on runway 08.
  • Leave the runway directly via B without backtrack to support the tower controller. So brake a little harder than normally :-)

Landing on runway 26[Bearbeiten]

  • Charts:
  • Aerodrome elevation: 1907 ft.
  • Runway 26: 2000 x 45 m, direction 261°.
  • When crossing NDB AB begin reducing your speed.
  • After the NDB AB (or D-4,4 OEJ) turn right on visual heading ~290° until runway is left of you.
  • Turn left on visual heading ~255° and fly directly into final of runway 26 and land on runway 26.
  • Leave the runway directly via A without backtrack to support the tower controller. So brake a little harder than normally :-)

Go Around / Missed Approach[Bearbeiten]

  • Chart: Instrument Approach Chart LOC/DME Procedure West
  • Climb on the localizer OEJ on course 066° (before reaching AB) or on course 064° (after crossing AB) to 9500 ft.
  • Turn left and enter the holding RTT and/or follow the atc instructions.

Approach: RNAV (RNP) RWY 26[Bearbeiten]

  • Chart: Instrument Approach Chart RNAV (RNP) RWY 26
  • This approach leads to runway 26 only.
  • The airport is surrounded by high mountains. So sticking closely to the procedures is crucial for a successful approach and landing!

How to fly[Bearbeiten]

  • Before starting the approach reduce your speed downto 220 kts or less.
  • IAF: RTT at 9500 ft.
  • Leave RTT not faster than 220 kts and follow the waypoints as programmed in your fms.
  • At WI002 start your descend.

Go Around / Missed Approach[Bearbeiten]

  • Follow the missed approach track back to RTT as programmed in your fms.
  • Climb to 11500 ft and hold over RTT.

Approach: RNAV (GNSS) Y RWY 08[Bearbeiten]

How to fly[Bearbeiten]

  • Before starting the approach reduce your speed downto 220 kts or less.
  • IAF: WI810 (= ELMEM) at 13000 ft.
  • Leave WI810 towards WI810 not faster than 220 kts.
  • At WI810 start your descend and follow the waypoints as programmed in your fms.

Go Around / Missed Approach[Bearbeiten]

  • Climb to 11500 ft and hold over RTT.

Departures out of runway 08 (as of AIRAC 1606)[Bearbeiten]

  • The airport is surrounded by high mountains. So sticking closely to the procedures is crucial for a successful departure!
  • SIDs out of runway 08 are ADILO 1J, BRENO 1J, KPT 2J, KOGOL 2J, OBEDI 2J, RASTA 3J, RTT 2J, UNKEN 1J.
  • For most of these SIDs you need the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70.
  • There are no RNAV SIDs out of runway 08.

How to fly ADILO 1J[Bearbeiten]

If you (your aircraft) cannot comply to the following procedure choose/request the alternate SID and route to ADILO:
RTT 2J - INN - ADILO

  1. After takeoff climb visually with maximum gradient.
  2. Do not fly faster than 165 kts!
  3. Fly on runway track (080°) and intercept the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066.
  4. Cross NDB AB and continue on localizer OEJ on course 066° until OEJ.
  5. Cross OEJ at or above 7500 ft.
  6. Minimum bank angle for the following turns is 25°! Adjust your autopilot appropriately.
  7. At OEJ turn right inbound to NDB INN.
  8. After completion of this turn you may speed up.
  9. At NDB INN turn right and leave the NDB INN on course (QDR) 288 inbound to ADILO.

How to fly BRENO 1J[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb visually with maximum gradient.
  2. Do not fly faster than 165 kts!
  3. Fly on runway track (080°) and intercept the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066.
  4. Cross NDB AB and continue on localizer OEJ on course 066° until OEJ.
  5. Cross OEJ at or above 7500 ft.
  6. Minimum bank angle for the following turns is 25°! Adjust your autopilot appropriately.
  7. At OEJ turn right inbound to NDB INN.
  8. At NDB INN turn right and leave the NDB INN on course (QDR) 181 to BRENO.

How to fly KPT 2J[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb visually with maximum gradient.
  2. Do not fly faster than 154 kts!
  3. Fly on course 066 inbound (QDM) to NDB AB, frequency 313.
  4. Cross NDB AB at or above 5600 ft.
  5. Minimum bank angle for the following turns is 25°! Adjust your autopilot appropriately.
  6. At NDB AB turn right and intercept a course of 245 inbound (QDM) to NDB INN, frequency 420.
  7. At NDB INN turn right and leave the NDB INN on course (QDR) 287.
  8. Cross NDB INN at or above 9400 ft.
  9. Yoy may speed up to 250 kts. No speed restriction above 11000 ft.
  10. Intercept the radial R-143 of the VOR KPT inbound, frequency 109.60, and follow this radial to KPT.
  11. Cross KPT at or above 11500 ft.

How to fly KOGOL 2J, OBEDI 2J, RASTA 3J, RTT 1J, UNKEN 1J[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb visually with maximum gradient.
  2. Fly on runway track (080°) and intercept the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066.
  3. Cross NDB AB and continue on localizer OEJ on course 066 until OEJ.
  4. Cross OEJ at or above 4800 ft.
  5. At OEJ continue along localizer OEJ on course 064 until reaching 9500 ft.
  6. Cross D-7,0 OEJ at or above 6700 ft.
  7. When passing 9500 ft turn left to RTT. Usually atc will give you a direct waypoint before reaching RTT.
    If no direct waypoint is given by atc:
    • KOGOL 2J: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 295° to KOGOL.
    • OBEDI 2J: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 093° to OBEDI. Cross RTT at or avove 13000 ft.
    • RASTA 3J: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 083° to RASTA. Cross RTT at or above 12000 ft.
    • RTT 1J: leave RTT on direct course to the next waypoint in your flightplan.
    • UNKEN 1J: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 046° to UNKEN. Cross RTT at or above 9500 ft.

Departures out of runway 26 (as of AIRAC 1606)[Bearbeiten]

  • The airport is surrounded by high mountains. So sticking closely to the procedures is crucial for a successful departure!
  • SIDs out of runway 26 are ADILO 2H, BRENO 2H, KOGOL 3H, MOGTI 2H, OBEDI 3H, RASTA 4H, RTT 3H, UNKEN 2H.
  • For these SIDs you need the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70.
  • The RNAV SIDs out of runway 26 are MOGTI 2H and RTT 2X.
  • Hint: If your first route waypoint is KPT ("Kempten") use the RNAV SID MOGTI 2H followed by a DCT KPT in your flightplan.
    Example: MOGTI2H MOGTI DCT KPT ULxxx...
    Alternatively request "Visual Kempten Departure" which is a visual departure (see below).

How to fly ADILO 2H[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb visually along runway track.
  2. At D-1.2 west of OEV turn right to track 272°.
  3. Do not fly faster than 165 kts!
  4. Minimum bank angle for the following turns is 25°! Adjust your autopilot appropriately.
  5. At D3-3 west of OEV at 3200 ft (or above) turn visually left and join the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066°.
    This brings you via NDB AB to loacator OEJ.
  6. Cross OEJ at or above 7700 ft.
  7. When crossing OEJ turn right to NDB INN.
  8. When this turn is completed you may speedup up to 250 kts.
  9. Leave NDB INN on QDR (heading) 288° to ADILO.
  10. Cross ADILO at or above 13000 ft.

How to fly KOGOL 3H, OBEDI 3H, RASTA 4H, RTT 3H, UNKEN 2H[Bearbeiten]

  1. Do not fly faster than 250 kts until passing 10000 ft!
  2. After takeoff climb visually along runway track.
  3. At D-1.2 west of OEV turn right to track 272°.
  4. Cross D-3,2 west of OEV at 3.200 FT MSL or above' and turn visually left...
  5. ... and join the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066°.
    This brings you via NDB AB to locator OEJ.
  6. Cross OEJ at or above 4800 ft.
  7. When crossing OEJ turn a little bit to the left and continue on course 064° outbound of localizer OEJ until passing 9500 ft.
  8. When passing 9500 ft turn left to RTT. Usually atc will give you a direct waypoint before reaching RTT.
    If no direct waypoint is given by atc:
    • KOGOL 3H: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 295° to KOGOL.
    • OBEDI 3H: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 093° to OBEDI.
    • RASTA 4H: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 083° to RASTA.
    • RTT 3H: leave RTT on direct course to the next waypoint in your flightplan.
    • UNKEN 2H: leave RTT on QDR (heading) 046° to UNKEN.

How to fly MOGTI 2H[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb on track 259° to WI505.
  2. Maintain visual until passing 7000 ft and established on track WI505-WI506.
  3. Proceed to WI506, WI507, WI802 and MOGTI according to your GPS/FMS.
  4. If your first route waypoint is KPT you can expect a shortcut, given by ATC.

How to fly Visual Kempten Departure[Bearbeiten]

  1. Make sure VMC (Visually Meteorological Conditions) are given.
  2. After takeoff climb with maximum gradient along the northern side of the valley on a visual heading of 270°-285°.
  3. Do not fly faster than 250 kts until passing 10000 ft!
  4. In the area of the village "ZIRL" (about 4 nm after end of runway) turn visually right on a visual heading of 290°-310° through the valley direct to KPT waypoint.

How to fly BRENO 2H[Bearbeiten]

  1. After takeoff climb visually along runway track.
  2. At D-1.2 west of OEV turn right to track 272°.
  3. Do not fly faster than 165 kts!
  4. Minimum bank angle for the following turns is 25°! Adjust your autopilot appropriately.
  5. At D3-3 west of OEV at 3200 ft (or above) turn visually left and join the localizer OEJ, frequency 109.70, course 066°.
    This brings you via NDB AB to loacator OEJ.
  6. Cross OEJ at or above 7700 ft.
  7. At locator OEJ turn right inbound towards NDB INN, frequency 420.
  8. Leave INN on QDR (heading) 181 to BRENO.
  9. When this turn is completed you may speedup up to 250 kts.
